History of the breed.

The French Bulldog traces back to the 1850's.  It began in England with the English Bulldog and a descendant from the Mastiff breed.

After baiting sports was made illegal in England, the working class people became interested in breeding a small, more active dog.

As the Industrial Revolution grew in England, the artisans, especially the lace makers and others who worked with their hands, took their skills and their smaller Bulldogs to France.  After growing in popularity in France, they were imported back to England.  When wealthy Americans traveled to France in the late 1800's, they fell in love with the little dog they saw on the Parisian streets.  It was a common scene for the "belles du nuit" (ladies of the evening) to stroll in their fine clothes and hats with a French Bulldog on lead.  In 1896 the breed was exhibited at the Westminster Kennel Club.  The following year the number of entries had doubled.  Tthe English judge that year preferred and placed the rose ear dogs first in all the classes.  The American exhibitors were so upset that their "bat ear" dogs had been shunned, they met and formed the French Bulldog Club of America.  It was at this first meeting that the first standard was written.  Please refer to   http://www.frenchbulldogclub.org  for more history and the breed standard.

Because of the small size of litters, cost of impregnating the bitch, and  a C-Section delivery, the cost of a puppy is sometimes a sticker shock.

When you have determined the Frenchie is the breed for you, take time to do your homework and contact several reputable breeders.

The Frenchie is a minimal maintenance dog and requres very little grooming.  A Frenchie is not for you if you need a dog to going jogging with you or one that needs to have a job.  The Frenchie's only job is to love it's owner/family and be the companion dog it was bred to be.  Frenchies are always loveable, happy to play, and happy to lay in your lap all day.  While the Frenchie is very alert and misses nothing, if a home invasion took place, my Belle would be so happy to have a new friend to share all her toys.
